ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT THE CONTINUATION OF THIS WEBSITE
Written 2/20/04
I have decided that in a few days I will close my website. The impedus for this is that I have been contacted by a major newspaper for a story. (I declined the request.) And this could well be followed by further, similar requests. One might think that this would be an excellent development from my point of view. And indeed, it is flattering. However, as visits to my site have increased - and media coverage would spur this visitation - I've had increasing reservations. Intially, when I sort of vaguely and very unrealistically assumed that the site could be targeted to certain specific audiences and that it would remain pretty much confined to these, I didn't worry about precedent. However, as the number of those viewing this site has increased, I've become increasingly concerned about this.
For example, what kind of precedent would it set if this worked? Imagine a picture on this site of me, or a piece about me in the media, posing triumphantly with several lovely women with whom I'd gotten together. And indeed, wouldn't a simple statement, just on this site, announcing that several, or simply two, women and I had gotten together have almost the same effect? What kinds of expectations would this give rise to on the part of those who knew of this endeavor? What sort of disruption could this cause? Maybe it would cause none. But I worry that it would.
Also, while the plan I set forth on the website would be one which could work given certain personality characteristics and a high level of compatibility among the participants, it is not something that would be generally workable in society. Monogamous marriage, even with its faults, is generally workable. So, without intending to, I'm promoting a social form that is unrealistic for most people.
I went into this so focused upon my dreams that I neglected to take a significant portion of reality into consideration.
Now, all the above said, I think I do have an obligation to set forth ideas. While presenting an idea was not the initial, major reason for this website, I think that this should be the primary reason for the site for the remaining days that the site is up.
If individuals have certain ideas or views that could be helpful to some, they should share these. But how far should this be taken? This is a significant question. While one ought to innovate, present ideas, suggest, etc. one also has an obligation to help maintain a functional society. My proposal impacts on an area that is very significant in regard to social order. Male/female relationships and marriage form a major facet of life involving the attainment of some key emotional fulfillments. This is a sensitive and volatile area. Expanding the ideas of what might be possible in this area, and thus helping certain people, is good. But this shouldn't be overdone.
The above given, then, what I plan to do is to leave the site up until this month's bandwidth is used. This will take a few days. Then, I'll close the site. I'll announce when this will occur. During this time, the website should be viewed as much as a philosophical statement than as anything else.
What will I do? Suffice it to say that I am not a revolutionary, and so, odds are that my actions will be quite conventional. However, a situation consistent with the ideas presented on this site is not precluded if it were quite probable that this situation would be workable for all involved and if it were quite probable that the situation would not be socially disruptive.
Thank you and I appreciate your interest.
